When pool water pH drops below the critical 7.2 threshold, the system quickly shifts into a corrosive state—causing swimmer discomfort, metal component degradation, and rapid chlorine instability. Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3), commonly known as Soda Ash, serves as the primary chemical agent for rapid and substantial pH elevation. What is Sodium Carbonate?

The Chemistry: How Sodium Carbonate Raises pH

To understand how Soda Ash works, you must look at its hydrolysis (reaction with water).

Adding dry Sodium Carbonate directly into pool water causes localized high pH spikes, precipitating calcium out of solution as Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) dust. Follow this 4-step protocol:

  • Measure Baseline & TA First: Test pool water. Ensure Total Alkalinity is between 80–120 ppm before adjusting pH.
  • Bucket Pre-Dissolution: Fill a 5-gallon bucket with pool water. Add measured Soda Ash and stir thoroughly until completely dissolved and crystal clear.
  • Slow Perimeter Pouring: With the main pump running, broadcast the pre-dissolved liquid slowly around the deep end or near return jets.
  • 4-Hour Circulation Rule: Let the system circulate for at least 4 hours before re-testing water chemistry to allow complete homogenization.

Sodium Carbonate raises pool pH by providing carbonate ions that strip free hydrogen ions out of the water through hydrolysis. To achieve optimal results without causing water haziness, always pre-dissolve the powder, add in controlled increments, and keep Total Alkalinity within standard limits.
