Acrylonitrile

Acrylonitrile(AN) CAS 107-13-1

Sinochem is a major Acrylonitrile & AN supplier. Meanwhile, our firm staffs a group of experts devoted to your development of China Acrylonitrile & AN.

Acrylonitrile is an important chemical monomer, widely used in the production of synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber and synthetic resins. It can be copolymerized with butadiene to produce nitrile rubber, which has good oil resistance, cold resistance and wear resistance.

  • Engineering Plastics: Key component in ABS and SAN resins, providing toughness and chemical resistance for various applications.
  • Nitrile Rubber: Crucial for Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR), known for excellent oil and chemical resistance in seals and hoses.
  • Strong Polymers: Derivatives offer high tensile strength, good barrier properties, and resistance to heat and chemicals.

Appearance: Colorless liquid with pungent odor.

Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in most organic solvents.

Properties: Colorless, volatile, transparent liquid with sweet taste and slight odor. Soluble in organic solvents such as acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, ether, ethanol, etc. The vapor of this product can form an explosive mixture with air. The pure product is easy to self-polymerize, and it is more likely to polymerize in the absence of oxygen or when exposed to visible light. It can strongly polymerize in the presence of concentrated alkali.

Production: Acrylonitrile is primarily produced through the catalytic ammoxidation of propylene. This process involves reacting propylene, ammonia, and air in a high-temperature fluidized bed reactor in the presence of a catalyst. This process, known as the Sosio process, is the dominant method worldwide and produces acrylonitrile along with byproducts such as hydrogen cyanide and acetonitrile. After the reaction, the product is cooled and the acrylonitrile is separated by distillation.

Storage: Store in a cool, well-ventilated dedicated warehouse, and implement the “double collection and double storage” system. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The warehouse temperature must not exceed 37°C. The package should be sealed and not exposed to air. It should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, alkalis, and edible chemicals, and never mixed. Do not store in large quantities or for a long time. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities. It is prohibited to use mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to sparks. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and appropriate containment materials.

Safety protection: Acrylonitrile exposure can occur through inhalation, skin contact, ingestion, or eye contact. Long-term inhalation of dilute vinyl nitrile vapor can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue and discomfort. The production equipment should be closed and protective equipment should be worn during operation. If it splashes on clothes, take off the clothes immediately. If it splashes on the skin, rinse with plenty of water. If it splashes into the eyes, rinse with running water for more than 15 minutes. If swallowed accidentally, wash the stomach with warm saline. If poisoned, sodium thiosulfate or sodium nitrite should be injected intravenously immediately and a doctor should be consulted.
