Aniline Description

NAME: Aniline

Synonyms: Benzenamine / Phenylamine / Aminobenzene / Benzamine / Benzidam

Molecular Formula: C6H7N

Molecular Weight: 93.13

CAS NO.: 62-53-3

Density: 1.0±0.1 g/cm3

Boiling point: 184.4±0.0 °C at 760 mmHg

melting point: -6.2 °C

flashing point: 70.0±0.0 °C

Appearance: Colorless to light yellow transparent liquid with a strong odor. Brown when exposed to air or sunlight.

Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, benzene.

Properties: Colorless or light yellow transparent liquid. Pure phenylamine is a colorless transparent liquid with a special smell. The solubility of phenylamine in water increases with the increase of temperature. When the temperature is higher than 167℃, phenylamine and water can be miscible in any proportion. Phenylamine is easily oxidized under oxygen in the air, light irradiation or high temperature. The solubility of aniline in aniline salt is very large. 50% phenylamine hydrochloride can be miscible with phenylamine in any proportion. It can be dissolved in 28.6mL water and 15.7mL boiling water. It can be miscible with ethanol, ether, benzene and other organic solvents and can evaporate with water vapor.

Storage: Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The warehouse temperature should not exceed 32°C and the relative humidity should not exceed 80%. Store away from light. The package should be sealed to avoid contact with air. It should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, and edible chemicals, and never mixed. Fire-fighting equipment of appropriate types and quantities should be equipped. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and appropriate containment materials.

Safety Protection: Phenylamine poses health risks via inhalation, skin absorption, or ingestion. Operators must wear full personal protective equipment (PPE), including chemical-resistant respirators, safety goggles, and protective gloves. Ensure the facility is equipped with emergency eyewash stations and containment materials. Keep containers tightly sealed to eliminate contact with ambient air and light. Aniline must be stored separately from strong oxidants, acids, and edible food chemicals.

Benzenamine Applications

  • Dye and Pigment Industry: It stands as one of the most vital, irreplaceable intermediates in the dye industry. It serves as the primary feedstock for synthesized indigo, azo dyes, and various deep-color pigments.
  • Rubber Additives: Essential as a core raw material for compounding rubber accelerators, vulcanization agents, and high-performance anti-ozonants/antioxidants that extend tire and rubber product lifespans.
  • Agrochemicals & Pesticides: Extensively utilized as an analytical reagent and key intermediate in synthesizing modern herbicides, fungicides, and targeted pesticides for agricultural health.
  • Specialty Chemical Synthesis: Serves as a chemical building block for MDI (Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) used in polyurethane foams, pharmaceutical ingredients, fake paints, and photographic chemical processing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why does Aniline change color to light yellow or brown over time?

A: Pure Aniline is a colorless liquid. However, due to its molecular structure, it is highly sensitive to light and air. When exposed to trace amounts of atmospheric oxygen or sunlight, it undergoes slow photo-oxidation, turning light yellow to dark brown. This color shift is normal and usually does not affect its performance as an intermediate in industrial synthesis.
