Bronopol Description

NAME: Bronopol (BNP)

Molecular Formula: C3H6BrNO4

Structure: A central carbon atom is bonded to a bromine atom, a nitro group (NO2), and two hydroxymethyl groups (CH2OH).

Appearance: BNP is supplied as crystals or crystalline powder, which may vary from white to pale yellow in colour depending on the grade. The yellow coloration is due to chelation of iron during the manufacturing process.

Solubility: Slightly soluble in chloroform, acetone and benzene, soluble in water, ethanol, ethyl acetate.

Advantages:

BNP at a concentration of 25ppm can effectively kill bacteria, multiple bacterial mechanisms, and a broad spectrum of gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, yeasts, and common molds in the environment.

Suitable pH range, effective in the range of pH 4~9, in weak acid, neutral, alkaline environment, it can maintain a strong antibacterial effect after addition.

It has a special control effect on common pseudomonas in water and is a powerful supplement to KATHON preservatives. Bronopol has been widely used in the preservation of washing industrial products.

In some cases, BNP releases a small amount of formaldehyde due to hydrolysis, but the amount of formaldehyde released in BNP is far less than the dose required for bactericidal effect. Therefore, BNP is not a “formaldehyde-releasing” preservative in the true sense. The relevant regulations of the United States and the European Union have reached an agreement on this.  Bronopol’s bactericidal ability is independent of formaldehyde, which mainly depends on the Bronopol molecule itself and the thiol group in the microbial cell structure. The radical interactions are associated with the formation of oxygen free radicals for bactericidal killing. According to this mechanism of action, Bronopol is not a “body-releasing formaldehyde” bactericide.

BNP Applications

1. BNP is mainly used as a preservative and fungicide. It is added to cosmetics such as shampoo, balm and cream in the processing process. The concentration in cosmetics is 0.01%-0.02%. It can also be used in detergents, fabric treatment agents, etc. As a bactericide. It can effectively prevent and control a variety of plant pathogenic bacteria. It can prevent and control cotton black arm disease and bacterial blight caused by cotton angular leaf spot bacteria by treating cotton seeds, and has no phytotoxicity to cotton.
