Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl Alcohol(IPA) CAS 67-63-0

Sinochem is a major Isopropyl Alcohol supplier. Meanwhile, our firm staffs a group of experts devoted to your development of China Isopropyl Alcohol.

Isopropyl alcohol is soluble in water, ethanol and chloroform. It is completely miscible with most solvents and can dissolve a wide range of non-polar compounds, demonstrating its versatile solvent properties.

  • Powerful Solvent: Excellent at dissolving oils, greases, and many resins, ideal for cleaning and degreasing.
  • Rapid Evaporation: Dries quickly and cleanly, leaving minimal residue, crucial for electronics and surface preparation.
  • Effective Antiseptic: A strong disinfectant against bacteria, viruses, and fungi, commonly found in sanitizers and medical products.

Appearance: Colorless clear liquid

Water Solubility: IPA exhibits excellent solubility characteristics. It is completely miscible (mixes in all proportions) with water, as well as with most organic solvents like ethanol, ether, acetone, and chloroform.

Properties: Colorless transparent liquid with a slight ethanol smell. Miscible with water, ethanol, ether and chloroform. Its vapor forms an explosive mixture with air, which can cause combustion and explosion when exposed to open flames and high heat. It can react strongly with oxidants. If exposed to high heat, the internal pressure of the container increases, and there is a risk of cracking and explosion.

Package: 200 L (160kg), 20 L (16kg)/ iron drum, 25 L (20kg), 20 L (16kg), 5 L (4kg)/ plastic drum, 500 ml/glass bottle.

Storage: Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. The storage temperature should not exceed 37°C. Keep the container sealed. Store separately from oxidants, acids, halogens, etc. Do not store together. Use explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities. Do not use mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to sparks. The storage area should be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and appropriate containment materials.

Safety Protection: Exposure to high concentrations of steam may cause headaches, drowsiness, and irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. Workers should take good protection and the workplace should be well ventilated.

About Us: With over many years as a certified Isopropyl Alcohol manufacturer, we combine innovation with stringent production standards to deliver high-performance product.

Propan-2-ol Applications

  • Solvent: It dissolves a wide range of non-polar compounds. It evaporates quickly and the typically available grades tend to not leave behind oil traces when used as a cleaning fluid unlike some other common solvents.
  • Intermediate: It is esterified to give isopropyl acetate, another solvent.
  • Medical: Rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting pads typically contain a 60-70% solution of isopropyl alcohol or ethanol in water.

Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) – FAQ

Q1: Is 2-propanol the same as isopropyl alcohol?

A: Yes, they are exactly the same chemical compound. “Isopropyl alcohol” is the common (trade) name, while “2-propanol” is its official systematic name assigned by the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry). They share the same molecular formula (C3H8O) and CAS number: 67-63-0.

Q2: What are the common purity grades of IPA available in the market?

A: Depending on the target application, IPA is generally supplied in three main grades:

  1. Technical/Industrial Grade (typically ≥ 99.8%): Ideal for industrial solvents, paint formulations, and general manufacturing processes.
  2. Pharmaceutical/USP Grade: Meets strict pharmacopeia standards, suitable for medical, cosmetic, and personal care formulations.
  3. Electronic Grade (EL Grade): Ultra-high purity with extremely low trace metal ions, specifically designed for wafer fabrication and electronic cleaning.

Q3: Can IPA be shipped as standard cargo?

A: No, because of its flammability, Isopropyl Alcohol is classified as a Class 3 Dangerous Good (UN 1219) for international logistics. It must be packaged, labeled, and transported in strict accordance with IMDG (sea) or IATA (air) regulations, typically using ISO tanks, IBC drums, or standard steel drums.
