PMA-S

High-Efficiency Polymaleic Acid (PMA) / HPMA CAS 26099-09-2

Polymaleic Acid (PMA), technically referred to as Hydrolyzed Polymaleic Anhydride (HPMA), is a low molecular weight solvent-based maleic acid homopolymer. Renowned for its exceptional threshold inhibition and crystal modification properties, PMA is a premier calcium carbonate scale inhibitor designed for high-hardness, high-alkalinity, and high-temperature industrial water treatment systems.

Sinochem offers high-purity, thermally stable PMA/HPMA liquid with stable solid content, serving global water treatment formulators, oilfield service companies, and industrial manufacturing plants.

  • Superior High-Temperature Scale Inhibition: Unlike traditional phosphonates, PMA maintains exceptional scale inhibition efficiency at elevated temperatures (up to 300℃), making it ideal for boilers and flash distillation desalination units.
  • Excellent Calcium Carbonate Threshold Inhibition: It effectively distorts the crystal lattice of calcium carbonate, preventing the formation of hard, dense mineral scales even in harsh waters with extreme hardness and high alkalinity.
  • Robust Chlorine & Biocide Tolerance: PMA exhibits high chemical stability and is completely unaffected by chlorine, bromine, or other oxidizing biocides under normal operating conditions.
  • Synergistic Formulations Support: When combined with zinc salts, phosphonates (like HEDP/ATMP), or polycarboxylic acid copolymers, it demonstrates a powerful synergistic effect, enhancing both scale and corrosion inhibition.

Properties:

1. Polymaleic acid is a solvent-based maleic acid hopolymer, with obvious threshold inhibition and crystal modification, and average molecular weight around 1000. It is the superior calcium carbonate inhibitor in high hardness, high alkalinity, and high temperature severe water conditions and a multifunctional formulation support agent in industrial water systems and other related applications.

2. It is widely used in desalination plant of flash vaporization equipment, low pressure boiler, steam locomotive, crude oil evaporation, petroleum pipeline, and industrial circulating cool water systems.

Usage: The product has better performance when combined with phosphonates than when phosphonates used alone. It is compatible with quaternary ammonium compounds, while not affected by chlorine or other oxidizing biocides under normal use conditions.

Package: 200L plastic drum, IBC(1000L), customers’ requirement.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place

Safety Protection: Acidity, Avoid contact with eye and skin, once contacted, flush with water

Homopolymer of Maleic Acid Applications

  • Desalination & Flash Vaporization: Widely utilized as an anti-scalant in multistage flash (MSF) seawater desalination plants.
  • Boiler & Cooling Water Systems: The primary scale control agent for low-to-medium pressure boilers, circulating cooling water loops, and steam locomotives.
  • Oilfield Water Management: Prevents barium sulfate and calcium carbonate scaling during crude oil dehydration, petroleum extraction, and wastewater reinjection pipelines.
  • Textile & Industrial Cleaning: Functions as a non-phosphorus dispersant, advanced cleaning agent component, and textile bleaching auxiliary to prevent ash deposition on fabrics.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Is there a difference between Polymaleic Acid (PMA) and Hydrolyzed Polymaleic Anhydride (HPMA)?

A: In the industrial water treatment sector, PMA and HPMA refer to the same chemical product (CAS 26099-09-2). The name HPMA highlights its chemical origin—it is synthesized by the polymerization of maleic anhydride followed by hydrolysis into a water-soluble polyanionic polymer.

Q2: Why is PMA preferred over standard polyacrylic acid (PAA) in harsh water?

A: Standard PAA or polyphosphonates often lose efficacy or precipitate in conditions with extremely high calcium concentrations, high temperatures, and high pH. PMA features unique molecular structures that provide far superior tolerance to high calcium ions and remarkable thermal stability up to 300℃.
