Rutile Titanium(IV) oxide Description

NAME: Rutile Titanium(IV) oxide (TiO2)

Molecular Formula: TiO2

Molecular Weight: 79.87

CAS NO.: 1317-80-2

Density: 4.17

Boiling point: 2500ºC

Melting point: 1830-3000ºC

Flashing point: 2500-3000ºC

Appearance: Light blue crystalline TiO2 Rutile powder

Solubility: Insoluble

Two crystal forms of titanium dioxide: Anatase titanium dioxide and Rutile titanium dioxide

Properties: It is chemically stable and is a slightly acidic amphoteric oxide. At room temperature, it is virtually unreactive with other elements and compounds, and is insensitive to oxygen, ammonia, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. It is insoluble in water, fat, dilute acids, inorganic acids, and alkalis, and is soluble only in hydrofluoric acid. However, under the influence of light, titanium dioxide undergoes continuous redox reactions, demonstrating photochemical activity.

Production method: Soleplate Process and Chloride Process.

Package: packed in plastic-lined and woven-outer bags or paper-plastic composite bags, net weight 25kg

Storage: Store in ventilated, dry warehouse, moisture-proof, anti-caking.

Safety protection: Isolate the contaminated area and restrict access. Emergency personnel are advised to wear dust masks (full-face masks) and standard work clothes. Avoid raising dust, carefully sweep it up, place it in a bag, and move it to a safe location. If a large spill occurs, cover it with plastic sheeting or canvas. Collect and recycle it or transport it to a waste disposal site for disposal.

Rutile Titanium oxide Applications

The product has a tetragonal crystal structure. Its many unique physical and chemical properties have led to its widespread use in many applications.

  1. Coatings and Paints: It is a key pigment in high-end coatings and paints. Its excellent hiding power, gloss, and weather resistance make it widely used in architectural coatings, industrial coatings, automotive paints, and other applications. It provides long-lasting color and protection, especially when used outdoors, effectively protecting against UV damage. For example, CR8091 is a multipurpose rutile titanium dioxide pigment suitable for both interior and exterior applications.
  2. Plastics and Rubber: Rutile Titanium oxide is used in plastic products such as PVC, PE, and PP resins. It not only imparts a white or bright appearance but also enhances the plastic’s weather resistance and mechanical strength. Furthermore, in rubber products, it helps improve the material’s abrasion resistance and aging resistance.
  3. Papermaking: In the papermaking industry, it is used as a filler and coating agent to enhance the whiteness, brightness, and opacity of paper, while also increasing its smoothness and printability.
  4. Inks: It is also used in the production of high-quality printing inks, particularly in applications requiring high hiding power and weather resistance, such as packaging printing, label printing, and outdoor advertising.
  5. Cosmetics: Due to its excellent UV-shielding properties, it is widely used in cosmetics such as sunscreens and foundations, providing sun protection and a whitening effect. Its chemical stability and safety also make it suitable for use in various skincare and beauty products.
  6. Ceramics and Glass: In the ceramics and glass industries, it is used to create ceramic and glass products with high wear resistance and high reflectivity, particularly in applications requiring high-temperature stability.
  7. Textiles: It is used in the dyeing and printing processes of textiles to improve color fastness and UV resistance.
